Teaching Music As A Subject

hey u guys. as part of my job i have to teach drama and music. drama is pretty easy as we can just muck around and play games.

Music- i'm struggling a little bit. U'd think after being heavily involved with music after 12 yrs u'd have a bizillion ideas. but i'm at a complete blank! I've been told that i should plan lessons that are fun and interesting for kids who aren't neccessarily muiscians or know much about music. also wanting me to teach in specific rock n roll and the brittish invasion. (brittish invasion was pretty much when uk bands topped charts- like beatles, david bowie etc.) which i dont find extremely fascinating.

So, i'm going to have diff groups of kids ranging from 9 to 17 and i have to teach them music in a fun way. Seems easy enough lol....but its not

So far i can only think of rhythm games and maybe playing some music and getting them to create stories to go along with it. Making up a rap or song about camp in groups....group sing-a-longs....thats about all i got.

any ideas? what would u like to learn as a non-musician or musician with non-musicians lol

play clappin games in a circle kids seem to love that type of stuff!

studying music for so long that u'd think that u'd have SOME sort of ideas but nadda!

clapping games is good- that'll be good for the 9-12 yr olds but its the older teens i'm worried about lol. i've only ever been surrounded by other musicians so it makes it hard when u have kids that dont know a lot about music.

thats true spesh if they're prob around the ages of 16
they cant exactly write a song or anything cos they wouldnt be able to write the music lol

I'm thinking for the older kids...do stuff with the guitar Like guitar sing-a-longs etc.

Or get them doing choir stuff...if they are full into music! Most musicians love to do choir stuff!! That's what I found in High School anyways!!

Do like the whole...oh what do you call them when someone starts singing, then a bar later another person joins in from the beginning and then after another bar another person joins in....do that!!

ok been thinking kristina how u said get them to write songs but they wouldnt understand cos they're not musicians? well seeing im the 'teacher' i guess i could teach them a simple chord prog on piano/guitar then like u said- teach basic chords and have jams/sing-a-longs

maybe i should just whip out hairspray and force them to watch it each session lol.

ROFL DO IT! Hairspray is THE MADDEST! I'd LOVE you as a teacher if all we did was sing Hairspray songs all day!!!

I've never heard them called 'canons', our school just called them 'rounds' But they would be fun! Sorry, no ideas from me...
